Boats are everywhere along the Maine coastline. From small rubber rafts to huge yachts and schooners. I try to make my photos of boats look different from all others.

I haven't written in this blog for a couple of months and I don't know where the time went. I've been blessed with a wonderful man in my life who is taking up quite a bit of my time but fortunately when we do things together, I'm able to take photographs. We visited the Camden, Maine area a couple of weeks ago and I was able to take over 1,000 shots. Here's a sampling of the types of photos I took.

Turners Falls, Massachusetts

Last Sunday Richard and I traveled to Turners Falls, MA to visit the Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography. The Museum was exhibiting the works of the students graduating from the Hallmark School of Photography. The place wasn't open when we got there so we walked down to the river and while there I pointed out the mill buildings that I have always wanted to photograph. So, we took a long walk and I took many photos of the buildings but these are my favorites (so far...).

Ocean Point Maine

This weekend we travelled to Ocean Point Maine and stayed at the Ocean Point Inn. Ocean Point is east of Boothbay Harbor and it takes about 10 minutes to get there from Boothbay. If you like a much quieter place to visit for a few days, this is the place. This is the view from our hotel room. It was quiet, peaceful and all we heard was the water lapping the shore and a distant foghorn.

After resting after our arrival at the Inn we decided to take a walk down the shore road and these are some of the images I took.

Hello everyone.

I just realized it's my father's birthday today. However, he passed away in 1993 at the age of 69 of cancer. He was in the Air Force during World War II and used to work on the bombers, repairing them and changing the engines I always thought that was neat. Using the skills he learned in the service he started a custom auto repair business and eventually succeeded as one of the largest auto salvage yards in New Hampshire. He also sold used cars (of which I am very thankful as he gave both my sister and I a car for High School Graduation).

Here's a photo of him when he graduated High School. My father and I were close and he was always supportive when I wanted to do little projects like raise Guinea Pigs or Hamsters and he helped me to build the cages. Also, when I wanted to make a project requiring hammer and nails he was always there to help (probably because he knew I was a klutz). However, he did allow me to have freedom to ride a motorcycle and go-carts when I was small and although supportive, didn't like it much when I used to gallop the horse through the business parking lot.

I was never sure how he felt about me until he died and people he knew said how proud he was of me, that I tried lots of different jobs and I was a success in his eyes. It was good to hear those things from his friends. Even today, almost 20 years later, he would be proud to see the woman I have become and I think he'd be pretty amazed!

All weekend while in NYC I kept thinking of the book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". So, I focused on trees. This one was in Central Park. I was taking a photo of the people on the walkway with the trees not the focal point and decided to angle my camera upward to get this shot.

For years I have told myself I want to start a greeting card company. I'm not sure if that's what I should do but I do make 5 x 7 blank notecards if you are interested. Memorial Lights Catalog

I was very pleased to have been the photographer for the cover of the Memorial Lights Brochure which listed all of the contributors this past year which help fun the lights at Monument Park in Gardner, MA. When asked to take this shot it was nearing the deadline for the brochure to go to the printers and Patty Bergstrom asked if I or one of my photographer friends would take a photo. I hate the cold but decided to go to the Park that night and see what type of shot I could take. It was windy and freezing cold but I parked at the entrance to the skating rink and walked up the street. Being way too cold to hang out and use a tripod, I braced myself up against a telephone pole and was able to capture this image (which I have also manipulated in photoshop). I sent the image to Patty and today she mailed me a copy of the brochure. I was pleasantly surprised!

This week I've been photographing horses at a farm in Hubbardston, MA. They have six horses..."Cowboy, Baby Behr, Codi, Zeke and 2 more whose names escape me at the moment. Here's one photo I took while there. I'll be returning on December 21st to take some photos during the Winter Solstice.

I don't spend a lot of time writing on this blog. Probably because I'm a photographer and not a writer. But some have said if I write down everything I say it would fill a book. Are they saying I "talk too much". Probably. So, if you are so inclined to read this, I just want to tell you that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. That may mean just a religious holiday but for me it means a lot more. I grew up Catholic and learned a lot about "religion". But it wasn't until I was about 29 years old did I come to realize that this "Christ" they spoke about in Sunday school, actually was and is real. How do I know? Well, I became a "Born Again" Christian on 4th of July weekend in 1984. No one, before that happened, would have ever been able to explain being "Born Again" to me without having me look at them with a "yeah right" look upon my face. So, if you're not getting what I say, that's normal. But one thing I can say is....everything after that day in July, 1984, everything changed for me. The sky was more blue, my thoughts were more clear and in my eyes, miracles happened for me. I was able to get out of a bad situation, my life improved dramatically (emotionally) and I seemed to have many good things happen to me quite unexpectedly. So. If you want to know more about what happened (and still does), keep looking at this blog. It's nothing special but yet again, it is. Just keep looking.

This photo was taken in my front yard. I have a parking lot and an island of flowers that I planted through the 8 years I've been there. The background looks like mist but it's actually the pavement on the street. I always find it fascinating that the photo I thought I took comes out so differently. Makes it exciting when I process the memory card.

I was up at 7:30 a.m. and waking up at 55 is so much different than when I woke up in my 20's. More aches and pains but that doesn't stop me. After a bit of walking around and feeling the life come back into me, I'm ready to try again. Today I have to get a few things done with Press Releases about a show I have here at my small Gallery (The Celtic High Crosses of Ireland) and another Press Release about the group show my photography group is having at the library the month of December. Along with that I have to show a house this morning.

So, I'll post a photo soon today.

I took a break from the blog to campaign for State Representative here in Massachusetts. As you may know, the election was last week and unfortunately I was defeated by the Republican Candidate, Rich Bastien. He campaigned fiercly for 8 months and I have to applaud his hard work and dedication.

But, there is a silver lining to every loss in life. I'm able to come back and post on my photography blog and hopefully someone will listen and look.

Horses along the Irish Coast

I've always wanted to take photos of horses running on the beach. While driving through Ireland in 2008 my husband and I were looking for a pitstop and we passed by a group of horses on the road. About a mile up, we pulled into a small parking lot where there was a restaurant next to the beach. Within seconds the horses ran by us, I went to the car and grabbed my camera and was able to capture a dozen or so shots. What great timing!

I travelled by myself to Europe in 1984 never having gone anywhere by myself before, let alone to a foreign country. I bought a ticket to Paris to return a month later. Little did I know it would be the adventure of a lifetime. I landed in Paris on July 13th and didn't even have a hotel reservation. For some reason I thought I could get on a plane, land in a foreign country and just wing it. Well, I did and was surprised at how friendly and helpful people were. This photo was taken towards the end of the trip when I went to Brugge, Belgium. Walking down a side street I felt I was being watched so turned and there was this mural painted on the wall. I had to take the picture.

For years I had been thinking about the Chincoteague Ponies that inhabit this island in Virginia. This April while driving to Florida I decided it was time to take a side trip and finally see this area. This photo was taken about 6 a.m. on the island and what a beautiful place it is. Unfortunately the ponies were quite a distance away so we didn't get a good viewing of them. But this view was worth the trip.

We traveled to Ireland for our honeymoon and I also received a grant to study the Celtic High Crosses while I was there. It was an exciting time and I was so in love. There were several crosses to photograph and this one was in Clones. We got to the city square and couldn't find the cross and we looked all around and couldn't figure out where it was. It was pouring rain to we were so frustrated and cold and wet. We stood in the square where the map said the cross was to be found. Funny thing is we were standing right in front of the cross the whole time. It was right in front of us and we didn't see it. Such a metaphor for life. Sometimes we have things staring us in the face and we fail to see it. My life has been very blessed and God has been a big part of it but sometimes He's shown me things and I haven't seen them....although they were right there all the time. I so wish that God was precise and would just say, Carolyn look to the left....or to the right. Instead He remains silent and wants us to figure it out for ourselves.

I'm writing in RED today because it's one of my favorite colors. When I'm not into a real color I like white. I once had a closet full of just white shirts in college and someone asked me why. I replied "Isn't that what angels are supposed to wear?". It was funny at the time. I'm hoping that some of my photos appeal to people and help them remember good things. Sometimes a flower can make you think of spring when it's freezing cold outside. Sometimes a photo of a horse can bring back a good memory of riding horses as a child. A photo of a cat can bring comfort and a smile. I hope my photos bring out the best in people and help you get through the day. Thanks for visiting my blog.

This photo was aptly named "Mr. Ed" by one of my Facebook friends. I was traveling through Hubbardston this fall looking for a horsefarm my Chiropractor had told me about and did locate the place. There were no horses around so I drove on and got lost. I drove what seemed to be in a circle and I ended up back at the same place I started. I looked towards the barn and lo and behold there was a horse with his head sticking out the barn window. I stopped the car and was able to get this image. He looks like an Arabian but I'm not sure.

I don't have a photo to post tonight that's new but here's one I may not have posted. I decided to hook up the old computer as well as the new and try to adapt to the new one as I wean myself off the old. I used to see the world in black and white and now it appears that I'm noticing shades of grey. It certainly reduces my stress.

Anyways. Here's the photo. This was taken at Johnson's Sugar House in Orange. They serve a nice breakfast and sell Maple Syrup.

Today I finally hooked up my new computer. It has much more RAM so I should be able to edit in photoshop a lot faster and without many glitches. Today I had a fairly good day. I met with a client this morning to discuss selling his land and then made some home baked beans. Along with that I tried a new recipe that I was going to make at Christmas time but never got around to it. It's called Steamed pudding and has applies, nuts, dates, and spices. It came out pretty well.

I can't edit tonight so can't give you my best shot of the dessert but here goes. Tomorrow I will be loading Photoshop CS3 and my other photo editing software. New computers can be a real pain in the neck.

Not much new to say today. I was sad when I woke up at 5 a.m. thinking about my pending divorce (January 19th). I have to meet with my husband on Monday the 11th to discuss finalities and I'm not sure how I will react. I will probably cry because I don't have an attorney. I never like unhappy endings.

On a lighter note, I'll post a happy photo here to end the day. Well, maybe not happy but hopeful for the future. Trees are interesting. They are all old looking and bare and gloomy in the winter and then in the spring they sprout new leaves and are beautiful throughout the summer. In the fall they make a grand exit with their foliage, the bright reds and oranges. Then they hide out for the winter yet again preparing to surprise us all in the spring. Perhaps thats the way my life will be. Just a little gloomy now but surprising in the spring!

Today I'm rearranging my desktop to accomodate all my peripherals. I have an Epson 2480 Photo Scanner, an Epson Printer, a Canon 9900 printer (for the nice shots), a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 to scan negatives and slides, my DSL modem, telephone, speakers, Viewsonic monitor, 2 external hard drives, a Wacom Drawing Tablet, an external mini drive, an external floppy disk drive (does anyone use those any more?), and a desk lamp. All the cables drive me nuts so I'm going to go to Radio Shack today to see if they have some sort of clamps to keep them all tied together and neat. Oh yeah, and I have to make room for both computers, the old and the new. I wonder if I can hook them both together? Hmm.

I went to North Adams last week and on the way, along Rte. 2 (The Mohawk Trail), I noticed a small gift shop with a very large colorful indian out front. He must have been 20 feet tall. I passed by but the light was so good I had to turn around and take several shots. Here's one of them. Remember if you pass by something you think would make a good photo, turn around. It's worth it.

Today I slept late and the phone rang at about 8:20 a.m. I didn't pick up but just stayed in bed until then, the doorbell rang. Now I knew I had to get up. Fortunately, it was my friend Norm plowing my parking lot since it snowed about 5 inches this morning. I happily spent the morning snowblowing and shoveling and feel good about getting a little exercise. One New Years Resolution is to lose 10, 15, maybe 20 pounds. Depends on how motivated I get. After watching "The Biggest Loser" last night I realized what a wimp I am when it comes to diet discipline. These people who have lost 100 pounds are amazing. I complain about not being able to lose 10. Time for some attitude adjustment.

Now to discuss photography... I posted this photo on line last night but wanted to post it here and explain what it is. In Turners Falls, Massachusetts near the Hallmark Gallery (formerly the Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography) if you drive down a side street from the main street there is a little outside display of childrens artwork. There were several LP records afixed to a frame and so I took a few shots. I've posted both the original (smaller size) and the HDR Photomatrix version which is obviously a photoshop plug in. I used the trial version to see if I liked it. What do you think?

New Years Day, January 1st, 2010

Its New Years Day 2010. I promised to "try" to post a new photo here every day for the next 365 days at least. The photo above was taken at the Gardner Municipal Golf Course the day after the ice storm of 2008. Perhaps I was crazy to go out to photograph but I didn't think I'd ever have a chance to see this type of scenery in our area ever again. As I was driving down Park Street I started to have my doubts with all the power lines down and trees in the middle of the street. But my little Toyota Corolla maneuvered through the debris and I was able to get many fine shots. The saddest thing to see was the destruction of all the trees along the side of the road on Green Street next to the golf course. Mother Nature certainly gave me some interesting shots that day. Although the house was cold, the power was off and we had to learn how to start a fire in the woodstove, I know that God provided me with images that will last a lifetime. I expect I will have many more opportunities to capture interesting images in the future.

I have had a very tough year. By accepting my friend invitation you have added more joy to my life. Like the quote in the movie, It's a Wonderful Life", "No man is a failure who has friends". And I know the same applies to a woman. I have wonderful friends and even though I can't see them in person, they have added to my life significantly. When I have posted photos online and people have made wonderful comments, my spirit has soared. You have made me what I am, which is, with the Grace of God, one of the best photographers on the planet.

Christmas Eve - 2009

It's hard to believe we've gone through another year. Christmas eve is a hopeful time. We await "new birth" with the birth of Christ. Although just another day of the year, Christmas is when the savior arrives to free us all from ourselves. The spirit comes soon after and by seeking that spirit our lives should be more peaceful. We will have found our destiny.

I watched Julie and Julia this afternoon and wondered where my life is going to go. According to the story behind the movie, Julie woke up one morning knowing exactly what she wanted to do. She was going to cook 254 recipes in 365 days and write about it in her blog. I'm not sure that's what I want to do with my photography. I could post a photograph a day, I could post photographs of my life and my loves. Who knows. I'm hoping the answer will come to me in the night or morning or mid afternoon. Whenever it happens will be the right time.

This spring I was sitting in my living room having a cup of coffee with my friend Norm when I heard a rap at the front office door. Usually people ring the bell but this time it was a light knocking. I peeked out the door separating my living room from my office to see who it might be. I noticed it was a Nun, black habit and all. I was surprised to see a nun as that has never happened to me. I had even thought of nuns as being a bit mysterious and unapproachable and here is one now knocking at my office door.

I opened the door and asked her to come in as it was cold outside. It seems she was going from business to business selling little books about her school and was trying to raise money. I'm not a fan of the catholic church but asked her to come in the house and wait and I would write her a check for the school.

In the process of writing the check I told her about my experience at a monastery several years ago, that I had gone to during a time of stress in order to regain some of my peace of mind. I told her that one of the sisters had given me a book in the waiting room and it was photos of a nun taking her vows in the Vatican. I told her it would be interesting to take those types of photos someday. Little did I know that she herself was about to take her vows and asked if I would like to take the photos. I was stunned and also happy since it was one of the things I had wanted to do in my lifetime. It came sooner than later. Here's a couple of photos from that day.

I'm finally getting back into photo editing today. Last week I was focussed on getting my Maine Real Estate License and passing the exam on Saturday, which I did (Yippee). Here's some more photos I edited a while back. I'll be posting many more as the days go by.

I was studying this morning for my real estate broker's exam and noticed my cat was sitting by the piano. The light was coming in and she looked stunning so I ran for the camera and told her to "stay right there". This is the result.

Buy Greater Gardner Now

For all those real estate buyers who participated in the Buy Greater Gardner Now program, I have given as a part of the program, a matted photograph of their new home. Someone who purchased a home through the program in August called today to see when she could have the photo taken. I suggested she wait until the spring so that the house would look nicer. Also, I take family portraits as well as do fine art photography. I'll be posting some suggestions here on sitting for a family portrait, what to wear, when to have them taken etc. Stay tuned.

Most evenings I spend in the front of the computer looking through images that I have amassed over the past 5 years since owning a digital camera. I finally purchased a Canon eos20D when they first came out It was alot for me to spend but I decided I had to invest in my future. One thing lead to another and I had to photograph my first large wedding and thought it would be a good idea to have a backup camera in case the 20D failed me. You don't get a second "shot" at a wedding and you don't have "do overs". I learned that when I missed the bride and groom kissing at the altar and I said "can you do that again?" and they just glared at me. So I again decided to invest and purchase a Canon 5D which is what the students at the Hallmark School are encouraged to buy. I have never regretted purchasing either camera and I'm hopeful my future will be filled with images from my heart which will also touch YOUR heart.
